FEMMEPOWER
Kikoko’s Crushes: Women-Founded Cannabis Brands
Here at Kikoko we think it’s essential to be women who support other women.
03.05.21
It’s hard being a female entrepreneur, and the cannabis industry makes it especially difficult. While we’re thrilled that roughly 37% of executives in the cannabis industry are women, only 8% of those are CEOs. Even more alarming? At a whopping 8%, that’s a significantly higher rate of female CEOs than most other industries. Women in cannabis are making industry waves.
There are quite a few cannabis brands that are founded by women for women and we think they’re fabulous. So, without further ado, please enjoy this list of excellent, women-founded cannabis brands.
GARDEN SOCIETY
Founded by Erin Gore and Karli Warner, Garden Society offers sun-grown flower mini pre-rolls and delicious chocolate edibles. They work with local, sustainable farmers and strain-specific cannabis.
Their pre-rolls are a Kikoko fav. They have three types: Calm & Focus (High-CBD); Blissful Rest (Indica-Hybrid); and Brighter Day (Sativa-Hybrid). Who couldn’t use a brighter day?
OM EDIBLES
Based in the Bay Area, OM’s products centralize around founder Maya Elisabeth’s belief that cannabis is a superfood.
We especially love their clean body products (bath salts and oils). Their ethos, very sensibly, is if you can’t put it in your mouth, it doesn’t belong on your skin. Right on.
QUIM
Cyo Nystrom and Rachel Washtien describe their company as a “self-care line for humans with vaginas and humans without vaginas, but who love vaginas.” Brilliant.
Quim products are quite simply good for your lala. They create lovely products for everyday vaginal wellness and THC-infused serums that boost libido and vaginal lubrication.
KUSH QUEEN
Kush Queen carries both CBD-only and THC-infused products. The Queen herself, Olivia Alexander, founded the company after becoming one of the largest influencers in cannabis.
Kush Queen sells bath bombs, pain relief lotions, edibles, wellness supplements, and skincare for both medical and everyday care. We love their Alive + Olivia bath bomb collab with 200 mg of CBD to soothe every ache and pain.
MAD LILLY
Entrepreneur, mom, health-advocate, and all around badass, Judy Yee, started Mad Lilly as an easy way to bring cannabis into our daily self-care routine. A fellow cannabis-infused drink company, Mad Lilly produces all-natural fruit juice spritzers in sexy, boldly colored bottles.
If you ask us, the passion fruit and mango spritzer is to die for.
MELLOWS
Based in San Francisco, Mellows makes gourmet marshmallows infused with full-spectrum, solventless ice water hash. In other words, they use good stuff that creates a lovely, euphoric high.
Founder and chief confectioner, Stephanie Hua, made sure there’s a mellow for everyone, so their products range from low to very high dose. Our favorite flavors are Birthday Cake and Strawberry shortcake. For those of you without a sweet tooth, they also have Brown Butter Sage.
POTLI
Founded by Asian-American best friends, Christine Yi and Felicity Chen, Potli describes themselves as combining traditional Eastern medicine with their Californian upbringing. Like Kikoko, they also support local farmers by sourcing from artisan-owned farms in NorCal.
Every canna-chef needs Potli on the shelf. Their THC and CBD-infused staples —chili oil, honey, apple cider vinegar and olive oil—(the chili oil is a must), are de rigueur for any self-respecting cannaseur.
FRIGG
Founder Kimberly Dillon recognized the physical effects of burnout — hair loss, itchy scalps and restless mind — and sought to provide an easy answer. CBD was it. And that’s why with each purchase they support a mental health organization.
We love the hair potion. It works too. Kimberly’s ingredients are either clinically proven or supported by Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, or indigenous plant wisdom. Got to love that plant wisdom.
MENDI
Mendi was founded by uber-athletes Rachael Rapinoe (captain of the U.S. women’s soccer team) and Kendra Freeman. Mendi is a CBD company for athletes. Knowing how prevalent pain is among the sporting set, they founded the company to offer healthier, natural alternatives for pain management and recovery.
Mendi uses US-grown organic hemp to create salves, oils, and ingestibles. We love the CBD Stick—it’s the perfect post-workout, mess free pain relief.
HUMBLE FLOWER
After meeting at Humboldt University, Thea Wayne and Jordan Darian were looking for luxury products harnessing the healing properties of cannabis. They couldn’t find many, and so Humble Flower was born.
Humble Flower makes luxury skincare products that smell divine. What we love about their products is their combination of the benefits of cannabis with the most gorgeous-smelling, mood-lifting essential oils. Our favorite is the body lotion, but their body oil and relief balm are also divine.
BROWN GIRL JANE
Malaika Jones, Tai Beauchamp and Nia Jones founded Brown Girl Jane with one goal in mind—bettering wellness for women of color. All their products are plant-based and all-natural, so no nasty ingredients or toxins.
Their CBD-infused Heal Body Butter is brilliant—it’s perfect for everyday hydration and pain relief. Plus, it smells amazing with ingredients like chamomile, calendula and aloe. They donate a portion of their sales to the Black Women’s Health Imperative. All around goodness.
OJO DE LA SOUL
Dania Cabello was a professional soccer player and spent over a decade studying the medicinal qualities of cannabis. Ojo De La Sol products are based on the plant-based pain relief remedies of Cabello’s Latina ancestors.
Their salve is uber refreshing (thanks to lemon and eucalyptus) and can be used for a plethora of complaints including arthritis, cramps, acne, skin disorders and headaches.
